Course Summary

Introductory Gaelic (Post-Beginners) aims to give students with a foundational knowledge of Scottish Gaelic a thorough grounding in written and spoken modern Scottish Gaelic by combining an active use of the language with an intellectual understanding of grammatical structure. By the end of the course, students may expect to have gained a good reading and writing knowledge of modern Scottish Gaelic and also to be able to participate in basic conversations.

Course Description

The course covers foundational topics in Scottish Gaelic language, including grammar work, oral skills development and vocabulary building. On completion of this course, the student will be able to: read and comprehend simple texts in Scottish Gaelic, write simple texts in Scottish Gaelic on a range of everyday themes, demonstrate comprehension of spoken Scottish Gaelic and respond idiomatically and fluently to a range of questions, demonstrate competence in speaking Scottish Gaelic, using a range of familiar expressions and phrases correctly and fluently, demonstrate understanding of the phonological and grammatical structure of Scottish Gaelic. This course has a narrow purpose: to allow students enrolled for degrees at Edinburgh who have taken the Introduction to Gaelic Language and Culture course (CELT08017) in semester 1 to continue studying Gaelic language in semester 2. We regularly receive requests of this kind but they cannot be accommodated under the existing structure as the year-long introductory Gaelic language course, Gaelic 1A (CELT08004), is a year-long 40-credit course and cannot be joined in semester 2. At the moment, it is possible for visiting students who have taken Introduction to Gaelic Language and Culture to enrol in a VS2 version of Gaelic 1A (CELT08018) in the second semester. Creating this new course would create a new pathway for 'home' students.
