A basic course in medical microbiology. Mechanisms and processes of bacterial and viral pathogenicity; the immune response; microbial transmission and epidemiology; host-parasite interaction; uses of and resistance to antimicrobial agents; immunisation and public health.

Course Description

Medical Microbiology 3 (MM3) is a third year course aimed at giving students a good grounding in theoretical and practical aspects of bacteriology, virology, parasitology and host defences. During the course, medically important pathogens and their interaction with the host will be studied. The course includes sections on pathogenic microorganisms and parasites, focussing on their virulence determinants and mechanisms; pathogenesis of infectious disease; the immune response of the host; clinical microbiology, epidemiology and control of infectious disease. Selected groups of pathogens or diseases will be covered in detail.

Written Exam 60%, Coursework 40%, Practical Exam 0%

Additional Assessment Information

Three items of in-course assessment count for 40% of the overall course mark, and a 2-hour exam counts for 60% of the overall course mark.The ICA consists of an essay (20%), a tutorial debate (10%) and a practical test (10%).
