Visiting students must have completed at least 2 Social Science courses (i.e. Sociology, Politics, Social Policy, Social Anthropology, African Studies, American Studies, Gender/Queer Studies) at grade B or above. Course Summary

Popular music is one of the primary leisure and entertainment resources in late modern society and understanding links between technology, music and everyday life is an attractive way to exercise the sociological imagination. The course offers a representative selection of ways of studying popular music from a broadly cultural sociological perspective that attunes itself to the question of technology, particularly digital and virtual technology. It will be based on a mix of theoretical and empirical approaches to popular music's socio-technical organisation, changing habits of music consumption and music's active role in ordering everyday life. Topics will include: streaming and the shape and nature of the music industry after Napster, the voice in popular music, virtual culture and music, digital democratisation, live music, and virtual idols.
