Course Summary

Italian Language 2 aims to consolidate the progress made in first year expanding vocabulary, syntax and grammar while further enhancing awareness to different registers and styles. Alongside strengthening the language and in preparation for the third year abroad, the course intends to address contemporary cultural aspects of the Italian society, which will also be tackled and studied more in-depth in the co-requisite course, Texts in Context.

Course Description

Taught in the target language, the course aims to enhance the linguistic skills gained in Italian 1. Upon successful completion of the course, students will achieve a language level equivalent to a B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Classes include one grammar tutorial, one language seminar and one oral tutorial per week. In the weekly grammar tutorial, students will learn new grammatical structures and concepts in order to produce clear written texts and to speak with accuracy and correctness on a wide range of subjects. In the language seminars, students will develop their reading and writing skills and their vocabulary, exploring a variety of cultural topics, and getting familiar with different textual styles and registers. The oral tutorials will combine oral expression and production with listening comprehension, aiming to develop conversational and interaction skills, and to prepare students for their Year Abroad. In all the sections of the course students will work using the text book, its digital contents, and the learning resources available on Learn. Attendance, participation and autonomous study are essential to make progress. Students are expected to undertake a very substantial amount of study outside class on a regular basis.
