HEA Fellowship

We offer a range of options to support staff working towards their HEA Fellowship.

HEA Table

Fellowships are portable across institutions, and can be achieved at one of four levels depending on colleagues experience in teaching and learning.

PDF of the table can be downloaded.

  1. Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA)
  2. Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
  3. Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA)
  4. Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA)

Who should enrol for the EdTA?

New R(D)SVS colleagues:  Any new colleague involved in teaching undergraduate BVM&S students is recommended to enrol for the EdTA (unless they have either existing HEA fellowship status, or a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) qualification).

Existing R(D)SVS colleagues: Any colleague involved in teaching undergraduate BVM&S students is strongly encouraged to enrol for the EdTA.

AFHEA vet programme

The vet school AFHEA programme has been created to provide support for direct application to the Higher Education Academy.

This programme includes two compulsory workshops and a mentor will be provided to support you during your application preparation. Expected completion within six months of enrolment with enrolment for this is in January and June. Fees for your direct application are funded by the school.

Contact VMEDWorkshops@ed.ac.uk for more information

Further information

All colleagues (new or existing staff) involved in teaching undergraduate or postgraduate taught students should engage with CPD relating to their teaching.  For colleagues who have no prior teaching qualification, we recommend enrolling for the EdTA. To enrol please email IAD.cpdframework@ed.ac.uk

Why is it important?

  • It can lead to enhanced teaching practice
  • You will receive nationally (and increasingly internationally) accredited status e.g. Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
  • This is a university priority that has relevance to issues such as the Student Experience, the National Student Survey, and possibly to future Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) activities
