International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Meet a Scientist

On this page, you can find some short talks from and about women across our Easter Bush campus.

Like you, we all have different interests and we don’t just work in a laboratory with test tubes: some of us are best at using maths to solve problems, some of us look after sick animals in the hospital, and some of us work out in the field looking after farm animals or exploring how to care for the environment. We hope you’ll see that we all use science in many unique ways and that there’s an area that might appeal to you!

Fiona McAuliffe: Healthy Hill Lambs

Fiona tells you about how she uses her science background to help hill lambs.

Silke Salavati: Dog poo scientist

This video tells you about some of the important research that Silke does on poo, which helps us understand how our guts work. Silke is a highly trained scientist and takes lots of care when handling poo to avoid becoming ill. It is important that you never handle poo – doing so can make you very poorly.

You must not copy any of the techniques you see Silke doing.

Susan Armstrong: Investigating vesicles

Watch Susan in the laboratory, discovering and investigating ‘vesicles’, which are tiny cell particles that can only be seen with a very powerful microscope (an electron microscope). When Susan isn’t in the lab, she is an equine vet and tries to develop treatment for eye disease.
