Research grant awarded
Steph Lalor, resident in feline medicine at HfSA, was recently awarded a Petplan Charitable Trust grant to continue her work on vitamin D metabolism in cats.
Steph will examine whether vitamin D status is associated with all-cause mortality in hospitalised cats. If cats which have a poor treatment outcome are found to be vitamin D deplete, we will then initiate follow up studies to assess whether vitamin D supplementation improves treatment outcomes in cats with hypovitaminosis D.
This works follows on from Steph’s earlier research which demonstrated that cats with mycobacteria infections frequently have hypovitaminosis D. This finding mirrors observations in studies of humans with mycobacteria infections and may be related to the diverse effects vitamin D has on the immune system.
