Microbiome Research

We have a research programme that aims to understand how bacteria in the intestines influences health.

Our research has shown that lactulose, which is widely used to treat neurological complications of liver disease, drives a major change in the gut microbiome. This work shows that drugs which influence organs distant from the intestines may do so by manipulating the bacteria in the intestines.
