Veterinary Microbiology Laboratory
The Microbiology Laboratory provides a range of services for the detection and identification of bacterial and fungal pathogens from animal and environmental samples.
This service is available through the R(D)SVS animal hospitals and is also available to external practices and organisations. The laboratory staff are highly experienced in the isolation of bacteria and fungi from companion animal, farm animal, equine, avian, zoo and exotic species.
Antimicrobial sensitivity testing is carried out, to CLSI standards, using the disc diffusion method. The laboratory has developed specific antimicrobial panels for the testing of isolates from different animal species and is happy to provide tailored antimicrobial panels on client request. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) determination is not carried out routinely but can be arranged on request.
The laboratory participates in the Animal and Plant Health Agency Quality Assurance Scheme to ensure the on-going proficiency of our testing systems. The laboratory is also available for, and experienced in, the provision of general and specific bacteriological analyses for research projects. Please contact the laboratory directly to discuss any research proposals.
