Vet students brush up on dental skills

Vet students have been given a fresh perspective on animal oral health thanks to a new collaboration with Edinburgh Dental Institute.

Students were given the chance to practice their clinical skills on mannequins of human heads and learn about the similarities between veterinary and human dentistry.

Staff at the University of Edinburgh’s Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies collaborated with the Edinburgh Dental Institute to offer an intensive two-day course for fourth year vet students.

It is the first time students at the School have been offered this opportunity.

The sessions were devised by staff from the Edinburgh Dental Institute - which is also part of the University - after they had observed and assisted with dental skills classes at the Vet School.

The course complements existing veterinary dental training at Edinburgh, which includes lectures and practicals in third year and a final year elective in general practice dentistry.

Dental training

This pilot initiative is part of wider efforts to expand our dental curriculum and to ensure our graduates enter the profession with the confidence to undertake high quality dentistry in general practice.
