The Lothian Bowel Symptoms Study (LABSS)

Healthcare and financial impact

This research aims to improve the identification of bowel disease among people with specific bowel symptoms.

The main aims are:

  • to identify those at higher risk, in order to detect bowel diseases sooner and help improve outcomes
  • to develop a good prediction tool for disease risk that will allow for better prioritising of referral times for colonoscopy
  • to develop a tool that can rule out significant bowel disease and substitute or delay more invasive investigations like colonoscopy.

Improving detection of significant bowel disease has the potential to improve outcomes for patients and their families and help lower associated healthcare costs.
