Defining a Primary Care Cancer Dataset

The Scottish Cancer Registry and Intelligence Service (SCRIS) is currently considering what data held in primary care could usefully be incorporated into SCRIS to enhance the overall picture of cancer care in Scotland.

The Scottish Cancer Registry and Intelligence Service (SCRIS) is a major health intelligence initiative. SCRIS supports cancer services to help improve cancer patient outcomes by providing healthcare professionals access to cancer-related information from across NHS Scotland.

IHDP has brought together representatives from primary care, Scottish Government, National Services Scotland and Cancer Research UK to define a Primary Care Cancer Dataset. This dataset will then be extracted from the Scottish Primary Care Information Resource (SPIRE) and feed into the Scottish Cancer Registry and Intelligence Service.

The group is starting with data related to cancer prevention, but as this work develops the ambition is to extend the scope to symptom recognition, to support early diagnosis of cancer.
