Edinburgh Clinical Trials

Study Background

Information on Study Background of the RESULT-HIP trial

The below information explains the current landscape of hip fractures and blood transfusions within the UK.

Hip Fracture in the UK

77,000 hip fractures per year in the UK and most undergo surgery

70% of people over 80 years old have a high rate of comorbidity, including cardiac disease

25% have at least moderate cognitive impairment

25 - 40% require blood transfusion

Mortality at 30 days is approx. 7% and at 1 year is approx. 30%

Blood Transfusion and Hip Fractures

2.1 million Units of blood are transfused in the UK each year, many in the perioperative period

Perioperative anaemia is associated with worse outcomes

Current practice guidelines lack consistency – this is what we hope to explore through this study
