Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research

Centre Wins at PCRS Conference

Work from the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research has won awards at the Primary Care Respiratory Society (PCRS) Respiratory Conference 2020

Work from the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research has won awards at the Primary Care Respiratory Society (PCRS) Respiratory Conference 2020.

Luke Daines, GP and CSO clinical academic fellow, was awarded the ‘Conference Winning Abstract' for work arising from his PhD investigating a clinical prediction model to support the diagnosis of asthma in children and young people.

Additionally, a team from the Centre developing an idea from our Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Lead, Elisabeth Ehrlich, have won the ‘Most Patient-Centred Poster Award’.

Conference Winning Abstract

The prediction model developed by Luke Daines and collaborators uses a dataset from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parent and Children (ALSPAC), linked with data from routinely collected primary care records. The prediction model is designed to support health professionals working in primary care to predict the likelihood of a child/young person having asthma.

The project is part of Luke’s PhD, which has been supervised by Professor Hilary Pinnock, Professor Steff Lewis and Professor Aziz Sheikh.

The prediction model is currently being developed into a clinical decision support software for primary care health professionals, as part of the Asthma UK / Innovate UK funded ADxDA study.

Most Patient-Centred Poster

The winning Most Patient-Centred Poster outlines the results of a project from the Centre which focussed on older adults and their experience of living with asthma. Elisabeth Ehrlich, PPI Lead with the Centre suggested this topic of research and was involved all through the project.

The research involved interviewing individuals aged 60 or over with a diagnosis of asthma from across the UK. Conclusions from the study suggest that as adults get older, asthma can present more issues. This can be from an increased burden of symptoms or from increased difficulties in effective management due to having multiple diseases. Participants also discussed experiencing ageism within their interactions with healthcare professionals.

Tracy Jackson, Centre PPI Research Fellow, lead author on the poster said:

“The Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research focuses on keeping people living with asthma at the heart of everything we do. This project is a great example of this, exploring a topic that really matters to people living with asthma and involving patient and public members from inception to dissemination.”

PCRS Respiratory Conference 2020

This year’s virtual Conference, being held between the 25th and 26th September 2020 brings together respiratory experts from general practice, community and integrated care. The programme will feature clinical updates on respiratory conditions, service delivery solutions as well as online posters and presentations from the winning abstract.

Luke Daines will give a presentation of the winning abstract on the 25th September. This will be from 15:30 – 16:15 in the PCRS Research and Service Development Highlights session of the PCRS Conference.
