Project: PUFFIN

Poly-unsaturated fats for improving nasal polyps and asthma (PUFFIN)

The efficacy and mechanisms of action of N-3 poly-unsaturated fatty acid supplementation in people with non-steroidal exacerbated airways disease and uncontrolled asthma.

Project overview

The project aims to work out if patients who have a particular type of asthma (non-steroidal exacerbated airways disease (N-ERD) and symptomatic asthma) will have greater improvement in controlling their asthma (measured by the ACQ-6 test) 24 weeks after starting the study when treated with omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)) compared to participants treated with placebo.

The study is an interventional clinical trial of an investigational medicinal product (drug).  It is a phase III, randomised, placebo-controlled, two arm, double-blind, multicentre clinical trial in 98 participants with non-steroidal exacerbated airways disease (N-ERD) and asthma.

Outcomes will be assessed primarily measuring the change in asthma control using the ACQ-6 test between baseline and 24 weeks post-randomisation. A subgroup of 52 participants (26 per group) will be recruited into the sub-study looking to test markers of inflammation and how they change from the beginning to the end of the study.
