Annual Meeting for Teachers of Statistics in Medicine and Allied Health Sciences

Overview of teaching of statistics within Medicine and allied health sciences across UK universities

This page has been designed to provide an annually updatable overview of teaching of statistics in Medicine and allied health sciences across UK universities. This currently involves the transfer of rather dated content (some dating back to 2013) from a colleague's old site. It was anticipated that after the 2019 'Annual Meeting' relevant contacts would be willing to share current practices on the way to providing more up to date and comprehensive details for public viewing. In the list below, pdf files include content which has been updated in 2019. However, a few of those who have replied to requests to contribute have opted to provide details concerning the teaching of statistics to undergraduate dental students and these details are therefore also included. Each year, it is the responsibility of the organiser of the 'Annual Meeting' to request that attendees send me updates for this page at Margaret.MacDougall@ed.ac.uk so that more universities are represented and the content can be extended and kept up to date.

The content to follow is listed according to institution.  Recently updated content (i.e. content updated in 2019 and 2020) appears in pdf form and can be conveniently viewed without downloading. For all other cases, clicking on individual headers will provide access to the corresponding details in a downloadable MS Word file.  If you spot that your medical school is not represented below, please arrange for the blank form below to be completed by a suitable contact.

Advice on completing the form
  • Please focus on statistics teaching within UK degree programmes in Medicine and allied health sciences, including through undergraduate and postgraduate entry schemes and intercalation; this helps with consistency across different users of the form and in drawing comparisons across institutions accurately.  It is very clear that practices and emphases for CPD and Master's and PhD programmes can differ substantially from those for the above programmes. If appropriate, a separate form can be produced and completed at a later date for these categories of education.
  • Please note that a revised version of the original form is provided as a blank form at the bottom of this page.
  • Please note that the above revised form is for use with reference to the academic year 2022 - 2023.
