Background

I am a Lead Research Nurse employed by the Clinical Research Facility at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and have been a member of the Edinburgh Critical Care Research Group since 2008. My background is mainly in critical care working as a staff nurse and then for a short period of time as an infection surveillance nurse. My undergraduate training was at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh where I graduated with a BSc (HONS) in Nursing in 2002.

I was successfully appointed as a Senior Practitioner (Clinical Research) associated with critical care in 2011 as part of the Clinical Academic Research Career (CARC) programme. This initiative aims to develop NMAHP researchers within NHS Lothian and strengthen the links between clinical and academic research. This is a 5 year secondment involving me undertaking a PhD part time with the University of Edinburgh whilst continuing to work in my clinical role as a research nurse. My PhD is based on the experiences of patients, family members and ICU nurses with critical care diaries and I am undertaking a qualitative study to explore this further.

Research

In 2011 I was invited to join the SCCIRL (Scottish Critical Care Interdisciplinary Research and Liaison) group as an early career researcher.
