Inaugural William Mapleson lecture: Applications invited

Professor William (Bill) Mapleson was Professor and Chair in the Physics of Anaesthesia at Cardiff University. He is best known for his A-E classification of the 5 Mapleson breathing circuits, published in 1954. He was a productive researcher and a superb teacher who inspired, trained and supported many clinicians and scientists. Quiet, unassuming and gentle, he was much loved and respected by the UK anaesthetic community and he received many awards and honours.

Bill left a legacy in his will to British Journal of Anaesthesia which has enabled the support of an annual William Mapleson Lecture given by a UK-based, non-professorial researcher (clinician or scientist) who is showing great promise in academic anaesthesia and its related specialties.

The inaugural lecture will be given at the RCoA Anaesthesia 2023 meeting to be held on May 16/18, 2023 in Birmingham.

Applications from non-professorial researchers to deliver this lecture are now invited.  Applicants should send by email: (i) a full CV; (ii) a brief summary of the proposed lecture (300 word max); (iii) a statement of support from a senior colleague/supervisor to operations@bjanaesthesia

Closing date: Monday December 3, 2022.

The applications will be assessed by a panel of senior academics in anaesthesia and its related specialties and the successful applicant will be informed in good time to prepare the lecture.

British Journal of Anaesthesia is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive membership of its boards, editorial teams, committees, employees, and award holders. We encourage applicants from groups under-represented in science and medicine.
