NHS staff experiences of working in critical care during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK

Dr Catherine Montgomery has led a study to understand the experiences of NHS staff during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and found that they shared a set of experiences which the authors have characterized as a 'community of fate'.

The study found that COVID-19 has changed the working practices in critical care and profoundly affected staff physically, mentally and emotionally. The authors propose that attention needs to be paid to the social and organizational conditions in which individuals work, addressing both practical resourcing and the interpersonal dynamics of critical care provision.
