A2B Clinical Study

The A2B Clinical study that aims to better control sedation for critically ill patients has resumed following a temporary pause due to restricted research activity during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in early Spring.

This important study, led by Professor Tim Walsh, will investigate how best to carefully balance the use of pain killers and sedatives for patients in ICU. Ideally a patient should be sedated and pain free but not so heavily sedated that they experience delirium, require an extended stay in ICU and afterwards experience distressing memories.

The study will compare if patients treated with dexmedetomidine or clonidine are able to come off the ventilator more quickly than those just treated with propofol. It will also show if there was a difference between the groups in the number of patients who experienced delirium in ICU, compared to how comfortable patients were and measure if patients' memories of being in ICU differed.
