Become a Sustrans Active Travel Champion
Are you interested in helping friends and colleagues be more active through walking or cycling? Become a Sustrans Active Travel Champion or get involved with the Staff Cycle Community.
Sustrans Active Travel Champions
Active Travel Champions help people be more active through walking or cycling for more of their everyday journeys. They give advice about active travel choices and set up walking and cycling activities in the places where they work or study.
The programme is managed by Sustrans, a national charity enabling people to choose healthier, cleaner and cheaper journeys. They work with The University to encourage staff and students to use 'active' methods of travel - usually walking and cycling - instead of taking a bus or using a car.
Champions are given a full training programme and resources, and receive support from a dedicated Sustrans staff member. In return, they’re asked to spend roughly 1 – 2 hours a month promoting active travel. Our Champions have organised walking groups, run stalls and buddied new cyclists on their morning commutes.
This volunteering opportunity is open to all staff and students at the University of Edinburgh. To join, simply attend an induction, where you’ll learn how to give advice and run activities. Sustrans also delivers inductions at locations around Edinburgh throughout the year.
Get involved with the Staff Cycle Community
The Staff Cycle Community is a staff-led initiative to connect cyclists across the University. Their goal is to share knowledge and support each other in a fun and relaxed environment. Everyone is welcome, whether you cycle for work or leisure, from complete beginners to seasoned cyclists.
