Items from over 5000 students collected for re-use

At the end of May, the University's annual end of term re-use plans swung into action.

Volunteers sorting through items

The University's Accommodation, Catering and Events team, together with the Swap and Re-use Hub (the SHRUB coop) collect goods from our campus and self-catering properties each year, with help from Bright Green Environmental Solutions.

Since the 26 of May, volunteers have been sorting through tonnes of old belongings collected from over 5000 students. Useful items have been safely stored for the 'free shop' in Welcome Week, where new students can pick up pre-loved items for nothing.

Some of the items have been taken away for re-use by several different organisations: Freshstart, who help people who have been homeless establish themselves in their new home, Bright Green environmental solutions and the British Heart Foundation.

The end of year clearout will continue until Friday the 8 of June.

We are hoping to beat last year’s target for re-use from our May collections, which was 13.3 tonnes.
