University finalist in five Green Gown Awards categories

The annual awards celebrate Universities and Colleges across the UK making sector-leading commitments to the global sustainability agenda.

Green Gown Awards 2018 finalist

The University of Edinburgh - including members of staff and students - have been named finalists in five categories in the 2018 Green Gown Awards, administered by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC)

Established in 2004, the awards recognise the exceptional sustainabiity initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges across the UK and Ireland.

The University is a finalist in the following five categories:

Sustainability Institution of the Year for our commitment to delivering positive impact for society

Outstanding Leadership Team of the Year recognising the work of the Social Responsibility and Sustainability Department in supporting the University to make significant progress on climate change, responsible investment, sustainable procurement and local community engagement

Benefitting Society for our whole institution approach to combating modern slavery

Sustainability Champion - Student to celebrate student Lizzie Rhoades' role in leading the  "Do Edinburgh" campaign to encourage student societies to adopt sustainable behaviours in order to save carbon

Enterprise in recognition of the Prosper Social Finance club, the UK's first student-run social investment fund

Making sustainability strategic

Dave Gorman, Director for the Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability at the University of Edinburgh, said "I am delighted to see the proactivity of Edinburgh's staff and students recognised with these five Green Gown nominations. Awards ceremony

The Green Gown Awards UK & Ireland 2018 ceremony will be held on Thursday 8th November 2018 at the National Railway Museum, York. Reflecting on this year's finalists and the role of the EAUC, Iain Patton, EAUC's Chief Executive, said:

"The EAUC has really stepped it up a gear this year with its commitment to the SDGs and partnership working. This has been driven by the post-16 education sector and its commitment to the Global Goals.

"The Green Gown Award applications show the truly pioneering initiatives being borne in post-16 education. Every day, tireless environmental, social and sustainability leaders across the UK and Ireland are driving change and showing the value universities and colleges bring to the economy and society. The Green Gown Awards exist to give them the recognition and platform they need to share their learning and do even more".
