Take part in Fairtrade Fortnight 2016

To mark Fairtrade Fortnight 2016, the Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability have organised and curated a series of activities focused on what we consider to be the three key pillars of fair trade: people, products and action.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Monday 29 Feburary - Sunday 13 March

Over the course of the two weeks, we intend to highlight the impact of fair trade on people around the world, raise awareness of the different types of products available and where they come from, and encourage people to think about ways in which they can make a difference.

We’re kicking off the fortnight with our Visions for Change lecture, Modern Slavery: Are we complicit?. The event will look to broaden our understanding of the issue and its impact, explore the steps that have been taken to eradicate slavery in the UK, and also identify what we can do as individuals to be more responsible consumers.

Students who want to get hands-on experience can apply for one of two fairtrade volunteering opportunities or apply to be an events assistant or student reporter.

Fairtrade Fortnight is also an opportunity for us to celebrate the achievements of the University of Edinburgh. Throughout the two weeks, we will be promoting the various ways in which the University is supporting fair trade, whether it’s through our catering, staff uniforms or electronics. We’ll also be asking students and staff to get creative (Ernest Hemingway style!), and share their fair trade-inspired ‘6 word stories’. Keep an eye on Twitter for more info.
