Research and public engagement

The University of Edinburgh is a world-leading institution (QS Rankings 2021, 16th) and one of the leading UK universities for its research quality and output.

The University has more than 7,900 academics and 5,800 postgraduate research students across the life and physical sciences, social sciences and humanities.

We are ranked as Scotland’s top research institution and fourth in the UK according to the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), the system for assessing the quality of research in UK Higher Education institution, (Times Higher Education, Overall Ranking of Institutions).

Our submission to the REF 2021 assessment comprised over 2,500 researchers across 28 units of assessment.
