External awards and recognition
The University’s efforts continue to be recognised across a range of social responsibility and sustainability topics.
Green Gown Awards
The SHRUB Swap and Reuse Hub Co-Operative, a student and staff led initiative, based at the University, won a Green Gown Award in the Enterprise category.
The University was shortlisted as a finalist in two categories, with its new Climate Strategy shortlisted in the Continuous Improvement category and its efforts to incorporate sustainability into the medicine veterinary curriculum shortlisted in the Learning and Skills category.
Green Apple Environmental Awards
The University’s PC Reuse Project was recognised as an example of environmental best practice by receiving the Scotland Green Champion Award.

Student Accommodation Awards
The University won the coveted title of ‘Best University Halls of Residence’ at the first-ever Student Accommodation Awards in 2016. The Holyrood North Residence Hall is a unique self-catered development, providing an unrivalled living and social environment for the 480 postgraduates it houses, and is the only student accommodation in the UK with a communal kitchen of its scale.
Athena SWAN Awards
Teams from across the University have been recognised for their efforts in supporting the careers of women in higher education. The Roslin Institute has received an Athena SWAN Gold award. In doing so, the Institute becomes one of only ten UK departments to hold the top award. It is the second Athena SWAN Gold award received by the University – the first was awarded to the School of Chemistry in 2012.
The University’s School of Health in Social Science secured a Silver award. Elsewhere, the School of Law, the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Science, and the School of Social and Political Science were each awarded Bronze.
