Human rights abuses in supply chains: what can we do?

Supply chains can be so complex; how can we be sure that the products we buy and the services we use are not linked to harsh working conditions, modern slavery or armed conflict?

This Visions for Change event, which is taking place during Fairtrade Fortnight, will explore link between our day to day consumer habits and ongoing human rights abuses.

Our expert panel, which includes speakers from Oxfam Scotland, Ethical Consumer, and Advanced Procurement for Universities & Colleges, will outline the key issues that we face, and what consumers can do to get informed and take action.

Areas likely to be addressed include:

  • The reality of human rights abuses in our supply chains
  • The role of higher education institutions to set an example, and ensure their supply chains are ethical
  • Identifying what companies are more ethical and understanding how we rank their social responsibility credentials
  • How to get businesses and consumers to change their habits and help them become better informed?

Speakers include:

  • Lisa Stewart, Campaigns and Communications Manager, Oxfam Scotland
  • Rob Harrison, Consultancy Manager / Director, Ethical Consumer
  • Emma Nicholson, Head of Sustainability, Advanced Procurement for Universities & Colleges (APUC)
  • Liz Cooper, Policy & Research Manager, Department for Social Responsibility & Sustainability, University of Edinburgh (chair)

This event is part of the Visions for Change series organized by the Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability.
