Getting to the Boilerhouse

We want to help you get to the Boilerhouse in the most sustainable way you can.

Walk

The Boilerhouse is around a 10-minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley station.

To get to the Boilerhouse, exit the station onto Market Street, go up Fleshmarket Close, or Cockburn Street to avoid the steps, cross the Royal Mile at the Tron Kirk and head along South Bridge into the Old Town.

When you reach the junction of South Bridge and Chambers Street (the street of the National Museum of Scotland), Infirmary Street will be on your left. Go straight down Infirmary Street, and at the end, you’ll see the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation. We are in the building on the right as you enter High School Yards: the Boilerhouse.

Cycle

It takes around five minutes to cycle from Edinburgh Waverley. We’re also within easy cycling distance of Edinburgh’s other main transport hubs: 10 minutes from the bus station and 15 minutes from Haymarket Train Station.

We recommend CycleStreets for planning your journey – more resources on planning your route available on the transport website. You can also leave your bike at Edinburgh Waverley railway station, covered by CCTV if that suits you best.

The Boilerhouse is equipped with showers you are welcome to use if you’d like to freshen up after your bike ride.

Public transport

Too far, or not possible to walk or cycle? Edinburgh has a tram route and a fantastic bus network. The bus services are frequent and go all over the city.

The Traveline Scotland journey planner will help you plan your bus journey – all you need are the postcodes for your destination and starting point. Google maps can also tell you where to catch a bus nearby, on the go.

You can also download the Transport for Edinburgh app to see different routes/buses, and purchase digital m-tickets. Edinburgh buses require exact change on the bus or an m-ticket. Trams require a ticket to be purchased before boarding at a machine and also accept m-tickets.

Edinburgh Waverley station is the closest stop for getting to us by train, around a 10-minute walk. Haymarket station is a 30-minute walk away.

Electric vehicle charging

There are two 'type 2' (22kW) electric vehicle charging posts at High School Yards.

Charge Your Car access cards will work with these posts; the site number is 50488. If you don’t have a card, it is also possible to phone up ChargePlace Scotland to activate the post, if you have registered with them.

You can use the point without a permit for up to four hours when parked within the designated bay and charging.

Available 24 hours a day, all year round. If the gates to High School Yards are closed, please contact the University of Edinburgh's Security on 0131 650 2257.

Parking and accessibility

We don’t have our own car park. There is paid on-street parking in the area, intended for short stays.

Accessible parking

Car users with mobility challenges don’t need to pay for on-street parking, using their Blue Badge. There is one blue badge spot inside High School Yards.

Car sharing

The Enterprise Car Club is an option for using a car only when you need it. If you need to come by car, car sharing is a way to travel more efficiently. There are two convenient Enterprise Car Club locations at High School Yards and Infirmary Street. One of the EV charge points is designated for an Enterprise Car Club EV.

There are two car parks in the vicinity: Blackfriars Street, just off the Royal Mile, and St John's Hill on the Pleasance.
