Selection for Specialty Training

It is not necessary to have done a large number of surgical posts to be selected for specialty surgical training.

Many trainees are concerned about positioning themselves to maximise their chances of selection into the specialty training program of their choice after Foundation Year Two (FY2).

It is not necessary to have done a large number of surgical posts to guarantee selection.

Indeed, most trainees are restricted in the amount of surgery they can do because of the philosophy of broad exposure which underpins the foundation scheme.

Selection committees understand this.

Ranking trainees for selection into specialty training will be done on the basis of information which has been accrued during the foundation years:

  • measures of competency
  • workplace assessments
  • portfolio experiences
  • supervisors reports

Other relevant achievements like research and publications will also be taken into account.
