In addition to General/Emergency Gastrointestinal Surgery, his area of subspecialty clinical interest is minimally invasive HPB surgery, which includes advanced laparoscopic management of gallstone disease, laparoscopic liver and pancreatic resection, percutaneous pancreatic necrosectomy and ERCP

Appointments and activities
Following appointment as a Lecturer at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in August 2007 and completion of higher subspecialty training in HPB surgery, Mark Duxbury was awarded a prestigious Clinician Scientist Fellowship and now combines his clinical HPB/General Surgery activities with a programme of translational pancreatic cancer research.
In collaboration with Mr Duxbury’s HPB colleagues, he is driving the further development of Edinburgh's programme of laparoscopic resectional HPB surgery.
He was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Oxford for this work, his thesis being recommended for a distinction award. His main research interests are the molecular mechanisms of pancreatic cancer cellular invasion, metastasis and chemoresistance.
A CSO Fellowship supports his laboratory work, the objective of which is to characterise key tyrosine kinase drivers of chemoresistance and to define how local interactions between pancreatic adenocarcinoma and stromal cells affect tumour behaviour. This work is conducted in collaboration with Professor Margaret Frame at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer and with Professor John Iredale at the Centre for Inflammation Research.
Mr Duxbury has received a grant from PSGBI in September 2011 towards his project on systematic identification and functional characterisation of specific protein interaction partners of the Homosapiens SID1 transmembrane family member 1 (SIDT1) protein in human pancreatic cancer.

Mr Duxbury received his medical degree from Oxford Medical School and completed Basic Surgical Training at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.
He commenced Higher Surgical Training on the Eastern Deanery (Cambridge) rotation. This followed a full-time research fellowship at the Brigham and Women Hospital, Harvard Medical School, under the supervision of Dr Edward Whang, with whom he maintains active collaboration.
His research into pancreatic cancer identified a number of promising preclinical leads that have since formed a basis for the development of novel anti-cancer therapeutics, potentially useful biomarkers, joint ventures with the pharmaceutical industry and significant peer-reviewed funding. This work, which included some of the first descriptions of RNA interference in pancreatic cancer, has been published in a range of academic journals and has been acknowledged by the award of prizes.
