Teaching and training

We contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and provide opportunities for student research.

Undergraduate

We contribute to the teaching of Year Three and Year Five medical students as well as offering clinical elective attachments from overseas students.

Our teaching comprises:

  • bedside teaching
  • tutorial-based teaching
  • Special Studies Modules
  • didactic lectures through the GI module (Year 3) and Surgical Theme (Year 5)

Postgraduate

Our very high level of specialist colorectal cases provide excellent surgical training opportunities. United Kingdom trainees, and those from abroad, gain considerable experience and direct technical supervision in Level Three coloproctology cases.

We are recognized as a Level Three Training Unit by the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.

We also have an active research record and encourage students and junior doctors to become actively involved in ongoing work.

A number of clinical research fellowships are available working towards MD theses and PhD studentships. There is also considerable ongoing research supported by major national funding agencies.
