Wards

We look after patients with a wide range of conditions ranging from inflammatory bowel conditions, such as crohns disease, diverticular disease and ulcerative colitis, tumours of the colon and rectum, appendicitis and abscesses, to name a few.

The colorectal unit is based at the Western General Hospital and consists of wards 22, 23, 24, 57 and 58.

Ward 22 is an 11 bedded ward open Monday to Friday with an emphasis on short stay patients undergoing investigations and surgical procedures.

Ward 23 and 24 are both 25 bedded wards which provide care to patient’s undergoing investigations and procedures 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Ward 57 is the surgical admissions unit consisting of 25 beds and is also operational 24 hours a day 7 days a week. This is where most emergency admissions will start their journey before being discharged home or transferred to one of the other wards within the unit for further investigations or surgical procedures.

Finally, ward 58 is our surgical High Dependency Unit where patients will often go to following surgery before being transferred to other wards within the unit.

Within each ward you will find an extensive team including;

• Specialist nurses, including a stoma team, pain team and cancer nurse specialists
• Healthcare support workers
• Pharmacists
• Dieticians

• Speech and Language Therapists
• Physiotherapists
• Other allied health professionals

Visiting time

14:00hrs to 17:00hrs and 18:00hrs to 20:00 unless by prior engagement. We would ask that visitors are limited to 2 at a time unless otherwise agreed with the nurse in charge. Please respect local procedures relating to  infection control where advised.
