Our overriding strategy is to provide excellence in surgical education, research and clinical training.

The history of the School of Surgery, the Regius Chair of Clinical Surgery, and surgical teaching and research in Edinburgh.

Surgical affairs in Edinburgh, including the practice and maintenance of standards of the craft of surgery, were first vested in the Incorporation of Barbers and Surgeons, who were awarded a Seal of Cause by the City in 1505. King James IV of Scotland confirmed the Seal in a Royal Charter in the following year. Much later (1778), the Incorporation became by charter the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Our main clinical and research facilities are at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the Western General Hospital.

Clinical positions within the department are generally advertised nationally through the British Medical Journal Careers section.

Occasionally we are able to accept suitably qualified visitors and clinical observers to the unit.
