Alex Hersey

Alex Hersey is in her 3rd year in School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences studying MA (Hons) Linguistics.

"I was drawn to Edinburgh because I had always known that I wanted to study at a lively, international university that allowed me to grow up quickly and independently. Not only is the city vibrant and bustling, even on a cloudy winter day, but the students of Edinburgh reflect a sense of pride and accomplishment that pushes me to succeed."

My student experience

“Whether you like going out for a night in the city or staying home to read, you will find people with similar interests and hobbies. It was very easy to get involved; in just my first year, I have become the Vice President of the University's Linguistics Society (LangSoc).

“Another fantastic aspect of student life is how easily you meet students from different years, countries and subjects. A lot of people in my circle are 2nd or 3rd years, from countries like Switzerland and China, or are studying law or biology. It really is wonderful to meet people from all walks of life.”

Around 100,000 students call Edinburgh home, giving the city a unique buzz and ensuring you’ll be in good company. Discover more about student life at Edinburgh.

My programme

“The best thing about studying at Edinburgh is the security in knowing I will do well in the future. I am able to have fun and explore a dynamic city, learn subjects which I am passionate and excited about, and make friends who inspire me and push me to do the best I possibly can. I know I will be getting a degree in a subject I love from a world-class institution which will enable me to have a happy and successful life.

“The most challenging part about the Linguistics programme is the work. The assignments require you to not only understand the topics fully, but be able to comprehend the subject matter in a conceptual and objective manner. The essays and exams require you to think fully and deeply in order to do well, which can be difficult if you are not used to completing work in this way.”

My future

“The Linguistics programme at Edinburgh is a close-knit community which has allowed me to network and make connections even in my first year. I know I will be able to contact my peers and lecturers later on in life to further my career.”
