Japanese

Information for offer holders on single and joint honours degree programmes involving Japanese. ようこそ !

Welcome from Professor Jeremy Robbins, Head of School

Thank you for your interest in the subject area of Japanese. Whichever programme you hold an offer for, congratulations on receiving it! I’m delighted that you are interested in studying with us, and we very much hope that you will join our community.

The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC) offers one of the widest range of languages of any UK university. Our students and graduates tell us that they value the School’s friendliness, the connections they have made here, and the in-depth guidance of our staff, who are experts in their field and passionate about what they do.

We specialise in teaching students with varying amounts of language experience so, whatever your existing level of Japanese, you will be in good hands. As well as the School’s professional Student Support Office, Japanese Studies has its own Peer Support Group, and being part of our Asian Studies department means getting to know students and staff in Chinese and Korean too.

Ordinarily, we’d be welcoming you to our building in the heart of the University of Edinburgh’s Central Area, just across George Square from the Main Library. As we can’t do that just now, we’ve provided as much information as we can here to help you on your way to choosing the right university for you.

Good luck, and we hope to see you in September.

Our academic staff explain what it will be like to study Japanese at Edinburgh

Studying Japanese at the University of Edinburgh is so rewarding. Even though I already had a keen interest in Japanese culture, there is always more to learn. The teachers and lecturers are all very down-to-earth people so, even though learning the language can be challenging, they are always there to support you through it and help you reach your potential.
