Undergraduate study - 2019 entry

GCSEs

Entry requirements for applicants with GCSEs.

The University requires certain subjects to be achieved to at least GCSE at specific grades. We equate alphabetic grades with numeric grades as follows:

GCSE grade equivalencies
Alphabetic Numeric
Grade A* Grade 8
Grade A Grade 7
Grade B Grade 6
Grade C Grade 4/5

Unless a higher level is specified in the stated entry requirements, a pass is required in English at GCSE Grade C/4 for entry to all programmes.

Some programmes require grade A in Mathematics. Combinations of Mathematics and Physics both at grade B, or Mathematics, Science plus Additional Science all at grade B would be acceptable to meet this requirement. Where Mathematics is specifically required for entry to a programme, the Welsh GCSE Mathematics Numeracy does not meet this requirement. International GCSEs (IGCSEs) and Level 2 Certificates are accepted as equivalent to GCSEs.

For particularly competitive subject areas, which attract a high number of applicants with AAA at A Level (whether achieved or predicted), we will also take into account the number of A*s achieved at GCSE.

Please note we have removed the general requirement of a GCSE in Mathematics or a science for entry to the majority of our degree programmes in our College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Only degree programmes with professional accreditation requiring Mathematics, or programmes that require a higher level of Mathematics than GCSE at C/4 will retain a specific requirement.
