Why choose Italian at the University of Edinburgh?

  • We are unique in Scotland in offering students a full academic year abroad within the four-year honours programme, regardless of whether you spend the year studying or working. If you are studying Italian and another language, you will divide your time between two countries, broadening your skills and experience.

  • We are ranked 3rd in the UK and 13th in the world for modern languages in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021.

  • From our own Italian Society to the Italian Cultural Institute, you will find many places to indulge your interest in one of the world’s great cultures, while enjoying the cinemas, theatres, libraries and galleries of one of its favourite festival cities.

Study abroad

One of my favourite parts of studying Italian has been the Italy by Design honours course, an exciting, active and participatory experience where students are the ones leading and hosting weekly seminars and guest lectures. Just like the rest of the Italian department, the Italy by Design classroom is a warm, communal and stimulating space.

Introducing Italian

As one of Europe’s most creative and diverse civilisations, Italy has a fascinating and influential history. Study Italian with us, and you will learn the language in the context of Italian culture, including some of the most famous and influential works of literature, art, and cinema.

We welcome students with various levels of experience, including complete beginners. You will have the chance to gain advanced skills in all aspects of Italian, thanks to four years of intensive training, including a year abroad.

You can take Italian as a single honours degree programme, or jointly with one of a wide range of other subjects, including other European languages, Classics, and History of Art.

Italian has been taught here since 1919, and has been part of our tradition since the 18th century. From creative writing to an annual Italian play, there are lots of opportunities to get involved in our cultural life.

You will be based at the heart of the University, in a world-leading festival city with fantastic cultural collections. This includes significant holdings of Italian manuscripts and books in the Main University Library and National Library of Scotland.
