2021 entry

Covid-19 disruption to 2021 exams

We are updating our guidance for UK and international applicants following any announced changes.

If your exams are cancelled in 2021, we know the way you get your grades this year may change.

We expect that in most cases exam changes or cancellations will not harm your application to study with us.

The alternative assessment methods used instead of exams will vary by country.

We're updating our guidance for UK and international applicants as we get more information.

UK applicants

Teacher-assessed grades will replace exams for school and college pupils taking:

  • A Levels and GCSEs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
  • Scottish Highers, Advanced Highers and National 5

Studying independently of a school or college

We know some of you might be studying independently of a school or college and may have concerns over how you will get grades this year.

We're waiting for confirmation from exam boards in all four UK nations on what will be put in place for students in this position. We'll be as flexible as we can be in considering your application and we’ll update this page when we know more about arrangements.

How we will treat grades

We are confident grades awarded by UK exam boards will reflect students' ability.

We will treat qualifications awarded in 2021 in exactly the same way as we would any other year.

There will be no change in the way we assess applications.

We will continue to operate our contextual admissions policy, which puts academic attainment in a wider context when we make offers and confirmation decisions.

International Baccalaureate

We know that the International Baccalaureate may be awarded differently this year, with exams taking place for some students while others will receive teacher assessed grades.

The arrangements the IBO has put in place to moderate these will ensure that the grades are equitable under both assessment methods.

We will accept the grades you are awarded in 2021, whether these were teacher assessed or awarded through an examination.

International qualifications

You may be studying for international qualifications or qualifications specific to your country.

We are monitoring the situation for students in this position.

Again, we expect to treat 2021 qualifications like any other year in most cases.

If anything changes the way we would treat your qualifications, we will contact you directly.
