Can I sign up for a language course if I am not a University of Edinburgh student?
Yes, our courses are open to everyone and you do not have to be a student in order to enrol. Please note that the minimum age for enrolment is 16 years.
How do I sign up for language courses?
You can sign up and pay for your language course online, by post or in person at the Centre for Open Learning. To find a full list of our languages, please visit our A-Z list.

Do you have any language taster sessions?
In term 1 we offer several 6-week language taster sessions in conjunction with The Edinburgh University Student Association (EUSA). Please note that these taster sessions do not cover all our language classes and are open only to current University of Edinburgh students.
I am not sure what my language level is, can I attend a class first to see if it is right for me?

Do I need to provide a language certificate to prove my current abilities?
No, we do not require you to provide any proof of your language skills.
Can I earn credits on language courses?
No, our language courses are not for credit.
I have enrolled, but my language course is too easy/difficult for me. Can I change?
If you think your language course is not the right level for you, please discuss this with the teacher. Once you have agreed on the more appropriate language level, your teacher will request a transfer for you. Please note that transfer requests must be received by the end of Week 2.
Am I automatically enrolled on the progression level course?
We strongly encourage you to book future courses 8 days before the start of your progressive course as enrolment for courses is not automatic. COL are happy to assist, please contact COL directly.
I am not able to make my language class tonight, can I attend a different session this week?
No, you should always attend only the class for which you have enrolled. Our full Terms & Conditions and Cancellation Policy are available.
Is there an exam at the end of the course and will I receive a certificate of completion?
There are no exams for our language courses. Our courses do not lead to a language qualification and no certificates are issued upon completion of the course.
