The Centre for Open Learning is proud to present a new series of free online sessions in a variety of stimulating subjects. This run of Winter Sessions will include exciting and innovative lectures across Art, Design, History, Science and Literature and explore cutting edge research and thought from the University of Edinburgh. The sessions are open to everyone and are free to enjoy from the comfort of your own surroundings.
All sessions will be delivered online using the University of Edinburgh's online teaching platform 'Collaborate'. Once you have signed up, you will find information on how to connect to the platform in your confirmation email or you can find information at the bottom of this page.

Title: The Book as an Art Form

'An artist’s book is a work that does not exist in any other form, is not a reproduction of pre-existing work, and is created as a book as the first instantiation and expression of a project’ - Johanna Drucker.
In this talk, Teaching Fellow Susie Wilson gives an overview of the varied and multidisciplinary nature of the artist book and look at the historical context from which it has developed. From the democratic multiple to one-of-a-kind, the artist book has established itself over the past 70 years as a discipline in its own right.
Susie has a BA (Hons) and Postgraduate in Drawing and Printmaking and for the past fifteen years the book form has been central to her practice. She has won several awards, most recently the Nancy Graham Memorial Book Award 2020 and was invited Artist in Residence at Edinburgh College of Art Library in 2016. Her work is held in a number of national institutions, including the National Galleries of Scotland and she teaches and exhibits widely.
A series of four lectures, presented by Short Courses Teaching Fellow Lesley Fraser, about the fantastic artefacts found at the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh, focussing on the National Gallery's collection of paintings of the Dutch Golden Age.
Enjoy the lectures at your own pace -- the videos can be used to prepare for a visit to the National Gallery to see the paintings in person or a great, digital alternative to an in-person museum visit.
Each lecture is approx. 20 minutes and includes subtitles.

How to use Collaborate
The format of the sessions will be lecture style in most instances. This means that you will not need video or audio support. The sessions's Teaching Fellow will be on camera throughout and share lecture slides, clips or audio with you directly on screen.
