This programme offers distinct specialisation areas in electronics: analogue VLSI design, bioelectronics and analogue and digital systems.

In analogue VLSI design, our facilities include a unique custom designed analogue integrated circuit specifically designed to support laboratory based teaching. Our advanced design and prototyping laboratories, advanced micro and nano fabrication facilities and state-of-the-art digital system laboratories use the latest industry standard software tools.

Alternatively, students may specialise in the emergent discipline of bioelectronics where our research and teaching interests include access to the fabrication facilities at the Scottish Microelectronics Centre.

For students who wish to study a more general electronics course including digital systems, a prescribed course selection is available.

This programme is run over 12 months, with two semesters of taught courses, followed by a research project, leading to a masters thesis.

There is a great deal of flexibility in our degree programme with three distinct streams as follows:

  • Analogue

Students from all streams must take the following compulsory courses:

Analogue Stream

Students must select exactly 90 credits in this group.

Compulsory courses Students must select exactly 70 credits of the following courses:

  • Analogue VLSI B (20 credits)
  • Analogue circuit design (10 credits)
  • Principles of Microelectronic Devices (10 credits)
  • Discrete-time Signal Analysis (10 credits)
  • Sensors and Instrumentation (10 credits)

You will gain significant practical experience in analogue and digital laboratories and become familiar with the latest industry standard design software and environments. Having been exposed to concepts such as design re-use and systems on chip technology, you will be able to cooperate with others in electronic system design. Recent graduates are now working as applications, design, field, test and validation engineering for employers such as BMW, Guangzhou Hangxin Avionics and Kongsberg Maritime.

These entry requirements are for the 2022/23 academic year and requirements for future academic years may differ. Entry requirements for the 2023/24 academic year will be published on 3 October 2022. A UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent, in electronics or electrical engineering.

Entry to this programme is competitive. A typical offer will normally require a UK first class honours degree or equivalent.

International qualifications

English language requirements

You must demonstrate a level of English language competency at a level that will enable you to succeed in your studies, regardless of your nationality or country of residence.

English language tests

We accept the following English language qualifications at the grades specified:

  • IELTS Academic: total 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component.
  • TOEFL-iBT (including Home Edition): total 92 with at least 20 in each component. We do not accept TOEFL MyBest Score to meet our English language requirements.
  • CAE and CPE: total 176 with at least 169 in each component.
  • Trinity ISE: ISE II with distinctions in all four components.

Your English language qualification must be no more than three and a half years old from the start date of the programme you are applying to study, unless you are using IELTS, TOEFL or Trinity ISE, in which case it must be no more than two years old.

Degrees taught and assessed in English

We also accept an undergraduate or postgraduate degree that has been taught and assessed in English in a majority English speaking country, as defined by UK Visas and Immigration:

If you are not a national of a majority English speaking country, then your degree must be no more than three and a half years old at the beginning of your programme of study.

Deposit

If you receive an offer of admission you will need to pay a deposit to secure your place.

  • £1,500 (this contributes towards your tuition fees)

UK government postgraduate loans

If you live in the UK, you may be able to apply for a postgraduate loan from one of the UK’s governments.

The type and amount of financial support you are eligible for will depend on:

  • your programme
  • the duration of your studies
  • your tuition fee status

Programmes studied on a part-time intermittent basis are not eligible.

Engineering International Masters Scholarships

  • £3,000

The scholarships will be awarded to overseas applicants who have been accepted for admission on a full-time basis for an eligible postgraduate taught Masters programme within the School of Engineering.

The scholarship will be awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit with candidates requiring a first-class honours degree from a UK university or overseas equivalent.
