Welcoming you back

UK-based fieldtrips and placements

UK fieldtrips and placements due to take place in the 2020/21 academic year are expected to go ahead, subject to any local restrictions and ensuring the health, safety and wellbeing of our students and staff.

You will not be disadvantaged if unable to attend a field trip as a result of circumstances changing due to Covid-19.

Schools will be in touch with you to provide further details on individual fieldtrips or placements.

Postgraduate Taught and Research fieldwork and placements

Fieldwork and placement activity options should be discussed with your supervisor, programme director, Postgraduate Director and local contacts. UK and local government advice should be followed and monitored regarding travel and physical distancing. The usual risk assessment processes must be followed for research students.

In accordance with updated guidance from the UK’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO), we are now offering flexibility to allow some taught students with courses that rely on a mandatory overseas element to travel in Semester 1, subject to meeting a strict set of criteria. This only applies to students on degree programmes with a mandatory overseas component – not optional activities. If you have a mandatory overseas component, please speak to your programme director and contact the SWAY team and we will explore whether this is possible: sway@ed.ac.uk
