Welcome Week 2020
Information about when to arrive in time to attend Welcome Week and the important and fun activities that are included to help you prepare and be ready to start your studies.
Welcome Week 2020: Saturday 12th September - Sunday 20th September 2020
“Welcome Week” is the week prior to the first week of the academic semester: 2020/2021 Semester Dates
This week is a dedicated time created for you to allow you to get settled, to explore Edinburgh and your campus, meet fellow students and academics and get a sense of the University life that awaits you.
When should you arrive
You should plan to arrive during 'Arrival Weekend' which is on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th of September 2020 (unless your course dates begin earlier).
You may have lots of practical things that you want to get done before Welcome Week, (like opening a bank account, setting up a mobile phone contract, registering with a doctor), but you need to confirm your attendance during Welcome Week before you can process any of these practicalities.
There will be lots of opportunities and support available to help you get everything done during Welcome Week. If you do wish to arrive to Edinburgh before Welcome Week, we would recommend that you use this time to familiarise yourself with the wonderful city.
Please note: The Edinburgh Festival Fringe will be taking place across all of Edinburgh from 7th - 31st August 2020. This means that accommodation (hotels, AirBnBs, hostels etc.) will be difficult to find and more expensive.
Types of events/activities during Welcome Week:
Everyone in the University is excited to meet you and together, we have put together an exciting programme of free events and activities that will provide you with essential information to get started, opportunities to network, explore and contribute, and provide you with that first and lasting connection to the University.
School Induction Events (essential)
Your school/programme induction is the most important to attend as this is where you will be confirming your attendance and finally completing your matriculation.
These events will take place during the week, from Monday 14th September to Friday 18th September. You will also receive communication directly from your school/programme prior to Welcome Week with a specific induction outline of the events and activities on, for your programme.
General Welcome Events (optional, but highly recommended)
Welcome Week is more than just introducing you to your new subject area, it is also about getting to know your new home, meeting fellow students and trying out new things. There are lots of activities to get involved with if you want to.
The full Welcome Week 2020 programme of events and activities will go live on the 'UoE Events app' on Friday 31st July 2020.
