These events are tailored to research (Phd and MsR) students and will give you the opportunity meet other postgraduate students

We are so pleased to welcome so many postgraduate research students on-campus each year and there are lots of additional events organised to help you feel part of your postgraduate community. 

Events before Welcome Week

Live Q&A online sessions 

Hear directly from staff who'll be providing their top-tips and answering any questions you may have on a diverse range of topics to help prepare new students for starting University. 

All sessions will be relevant to you but there are also a few specific sessions organised for PGR students: 

  • How to get off to a successful start in your postgraduate research degree
  • How to use the Careers Service as a postgraduate student

Events during Welcome Week 

Doctoral College welcome for all new postgraduate researchers 

Date: Tuesday 10th September

Time: 10:00 - 11:00 (doors open at 09:45)

Venue: McEwan Hall

No booking is required to attend this event. However, it is strongly recommended that you arrive for the 'doors open' time to start queuing as it will be first-come, first-served to enter.

This welcome event will share useful information about how postgraduate research is structured and supported at the University and involve short talks about what it means to be a postgraduate researcher at Edinburgh. Please note that this event is designed to complement local events at School and institute level. 

  • 10.00 - 10.05 - Opening and Welcome (Professor Laura Bradley, Dean of Postgraduate Research, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences)
  • 10.05 - 10.10 - Welcome from the University PGR representative (Nikos Avramidis)
  • 10.10 - 10.15 - Postgraduate research at Edinburgh (Professor Antony Maciocia, Dean of Postgraduate Research, College of Science and Engineering)
  • 10.15 -10.20 - Supervision and the Code of Practice (Professor Patrick Hadoke, Director for Postgraduate Research and Early Career Researcher Experience, College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine)
  • 10.25 - 10.30 - Time for questions 
  • 10.30 - 10.55 - Short talks from current postgraduate researchers 
  • 10.55 - 11.00 - Close and what else to look out for this week

PGR Social and Networking Session

Date: Thursday 12th September

Time: 14:00 - 15:30 (doors open at 13:45)

Venue: PlayFair Library, Old College

Booking required: Book on Eventbrite (limited capacity)  

Join fellow PGR students for drinks and networking. Make key connections with other new students, and have the opportunity to meet current and former students to gain key insights for your student journey. This fun and informal event is held in the stunning Playfair Library in Old College.
