January Welcome events
January welcome is more than just being introduced to your new subject area - it is your time to get comfortable with your new surroundings, meet fellow students and try out new things.
January welcome is traditionally the week before studies start.
This time before you start your studies is your time to do what you feel will help you the most in getting ready. There will be opportunities to learn more about the University and Edinburgh, to meet fellow students, try new things, do the practical things you need to get done and it will be your time to start to really feel like a student of the University of Edinburgh.
We are so excited to support you as you begin your studies with us.
Welcoming you for longer
This year we will be providing a longer period of welcome, this will not affect your teaching schedule but will give you extra opportunities around your teaching schedule to meet new people and to further find out the information you need to help you get settled into your learning and to feel part of the University community.
Making the most out of your induction
Essential induction events
Your School induction activities are the most essential to attend. You will be given the information about your courses, the expectations of you and the chance to meet your fellow students.
Your School or programme induction is the most important to attend. The information that your School provides will also be available for you to see afterwards.
You will receive direct email communication from your School or programme confirming the details of your induction activities and how to attend.
Don't miss out on emails from your School

Optional (but highly recommended) induction events
There will also be University-wide induction activities that will give you the opportunity to feel part of your new community – these will all be digital and are not mandatory to attend but we would highly recommend that you attend what you can. Most activities will be recorded and repeated for a number of weeks.
Explore your new home

When you do arrive into Edinburgh, we would highly recommend that you focus this time to get to know your surroundings and become accustomed to your new home and also the safety guidelines in place in Scotland, which may differ from your home country. There are lots of places that are open and safe to engage with as long as you keep a safe 2m distance from other people and wear a face covering when entering shops/public transport.
Plan your induction schedule
The full Welcome Week 2020/2021 programme of induction activities is live on the UoE Events app. Download the app from any app store.
Please check your emails regularly for direct communications, including information about specific activities nearer to the start date.
