Welcome Week events
Welcome Week is more than just being introduced to your new subject area - it is your time to get comfortable with your new surroundings, meet fellow students and try out new things.
Welcome Week is traditionally the week before studies start. This year it will start on 13 September 2021, wth a number of social events taking place from 11th September.
There will be opportunities to learn more about the University and Edinburgh, to meet fellow students, try new things, do the practical things you need to get done and it will be your time to start to really feel like a student of the University of Edinburgh. All areas of the University are working together to create a mix of in-person and digital events to help you get settled into University. Our induction activities will give you all of the information you need to get started, along with opportunities to network, explore, contribute and give you that first and lasting connection to the University.
We are so excited to support you as you begin your studies with us.
Essential induction events
Attendance at your School induction events is essential - you will be given the information about your programme, the expectations of you and the chance to connect with fellow students.
Your School or programme induction is the most important to attend and will likely take place within Welcome Week. You will receive direct email communication from your School or programme confirming the details of your induction activities and how to attend.
Don't miss out on emails from your School
Optional (but highly recommended) induction events
There will also be University-wide induction activities from 11th - 18th September that will give you the opportunity to feel part of your new community – these are not mandatory to attend but we would highly recommend that you attend what you can. This year there will be an covered outdoor venue in Bristo Square, where the University of Edinburgh Student’s Association and Edinburgh University Sport will hold an Activities and Sports Fairs, film screenings, cultural events and more. Both the Activities and Sports Fairs will be broken down into 2 sessions per day with 40 different exhibitors at each. We’ll also be ticketing the Fairs to allow for a safe flow of students throughout the day. The Principal's Welcome film will be shown at the Fairs throughout the week, launching at midday on Monday 13th September.
There will also be an online Activities Fair the week before Welcome Week, and lots of events into Semester 1, so if students can't make Welcome Week there are still lots of ways to get involved!
Explore your new home
When you do arrive in Edinburgh, we recommend that you spend some time getting to know your surroundings and becoming accustomed to your new home as well as the safety guidelines in place in Scotland, which may differ from your home country.
