Explore University accommodation
Find the right University accommodation for you and what support will be available to you during your stay.
We have different halls of residence for undergraduate students and postgraduate students. We also offer individual flats and accommodation for families and couples.
Halls of residence
Most of our accommodation is in the form of entire buildings of flats, called 'residences' or 'halls of residence'.
The layout of our residences includes 2-10 person flats, single rooms, shared rooms, and corridors with common rooms.
All of our halls of residence sites have at a minimum:
- fortnightly cleaning service of communal areas
- wireless internet with outlets for wired connection
- laundry facilities operated by an App or by buying laundry cards
- A Residence Life team (comprised of older University students) who provides social support and encourages socialising among the new student residents
Additionally, once an offer is accepted, new residents will be able to order bedding packs and other household items online with UniKitOut who will deliver the items to your room before you arrive:
Catered or self-catered
All our postgraduate accommodation is self-catered and kitchen facilities are available in all locations.
When looking at university accommodation, another aspect to consider is choosing between catered halls, which will have a dining room available for you to eat pre-cooked meals in, or self-catered halls which contain kitchens where you can cook your own food.
It is important to note that there is a substantial difference in the accommodation fees for catered versus self-catered accommodation.
Accommodation for families and couples
We own a number of individual flats which are suitable for accommodating couples and families.
However, these flats are very limited, and securing a flat is not guaranteed. Offers are made on a first-come, first-served basis; and only once you have an Unconditional Firm (UF) offer to study at the University of Edinburgh.
A flat, similar to an apartment, is a housing unit that's self-contained but is part of a larger building with several units.
The University also owns a limited number of individual flats across the city; these can be found on the Accommodation, Catering and Events website.
If you need specific information about accessibility facilities available within University accommodation, please get in touch with the allocations division as early as possible to discuss with a member of staff.
