Apply for University accommodation

How to apply for university accommodation and accept your accommodation offer. Find out about the accommodation guarantee conditions and deadlines.

You will only be able to apply for accommodation once you have accepted an offer (unconditional, conditional, or insurance) to study at the University of Edinburgh.

The application process usually opens in March of each year for students looking to move in at the start of semester 1 in September.

How to apply

Applications are made through MyEd. Before starting your accommodation application, please take the time to read the Ready to Apply step-by-step guide.

Choose your preferred accommodation

In your accommodation application, you will be asked for your preferred residences out of those available to you. You can explore and check out the different types of University accommodation options using the accommodation search.

Include your exact name

Ensure that you enter your name exactly as it appears on your passport to make sure that it matches your student record.

Include a valid email address

Accommodation offers are emailed out to students and you will only have seven days to accept or reject your offer.

Please ensure you apply using a valid email address and one which you check regularly.

If you plan on going away for the summer, please ensure you still have access to either your emails or the University’s MyED portal. Or leave details with someone who can access either of these accounts on your behalf.

Please note: It is the University’s policy to issue all accommodation offers and receive all acceptances online.

Receiving a response to your application

We will make offers of accommodation from June onwards to unconditional offer holders who have submitted an accommodation application.

If you are a conditional offer holder, we will respond to your application once we receive your exam results.

Update on responding to applications

We are currently dealing with an unprecedented number of accommodation applications from those students who have recently received an unconditional offer to study at the University.

We are working through your applications as quickly as we can. However, we are keen to make sure everyone is offered one of their five preferences, so please bear with us. If you haven’t heard from us yet, we will be in touch very soon.

Arrange payment

A requirement of accepting your accommodation offer is to arrange a payment method for accommodation fees.

We expect you to arrange funding for accommodation fees and living cost before you start your programme of study.

You can find more detailed information on paying accommodation fees on the University Accommodation, Catering and Events website.

Your accommodation guarantee

For most undergraduate students and all postgraduate students, the University guarantees a place in University accommodation for the academic year. Although the exact location and nature of your accommodation cannot be confirmed until you receive your offer.

Even if you do not qualify for the guarantee we will do our best to help you. We expect to be able to offer accommodation to all new students starting in September 2020.

Students without an accommodation offer

If you have not been successful in your application and would still like to pursue staying in University accommodation, contact the University accommodation Allocation Team to ask about any last-minute changes in availability.
