January Welcome 2020

The University hosts welcome events specifically for visiting and exchange students who are joining the University in January each year.

January Welcome 2020: Wed 8th Jan - Sun 12th Jan 2020

 

“January Welcome” is the time prior to the first week of the academic semester: 2019/2020 Semester Dates

This time is a dedicated time created for you to allow you to get to know Edinburgh, your campus, meet fellow students and academics and get a sense of the University life that awaits you.

 

All new students are encouraged to arrive on Wednesday 8th January 2020. 

There may be lots of practical things you want to achieve; like opening a bank account, setting up a mobile phone contract, registering with a doctor, before Welcome Week, however you must confirm your attendance during Welcome Week before you can process any of these practicalities. There will be lots of opportunities and support available to you to complete these tasks, as well as your outstanding  ‘Top 6 Tasks’ during Welcome Week. 

Types of events/activities during Welcome Week: 

All areas of the University are excited to meet you and together, we have put together an exciting programme of free events and activities that will provide you with essential information to get started, opportunities to network, explore and contribute, and provide you with that first and lasting connection to the University.

School Induction Events (essential) 

Your school/programme induction is the most important to attend as this is where you will be confirming your attendance and ultimately completing your matriculation.

 

The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) 

Welcome event details: Thursday 9th January 2020, 10:00 - 12:30, McEwan Hall Auditorium

Courses from following schools: Business School, Divinity, Economics, Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), Education, Health in Social Science (HSS), History, Classics and Archaeology (HCA), Law, Literature, Languages and Cultures (LLC), Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences (PPLS), Social and Political Science (SPS).

 

The College of Science & Engineering (CSE)

Welcome event details: Thursday 9th January 2020, 10:00 - 11:30, Appleton Tower, Lecture Theatre 3

Course from following schools: Biomedical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering, GeoSciences, Informatics, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy

 

More Information about induction meetings: 

These mandatory induction meetings will be your opportunity to be welcomed to the University of Edinburgh to learn what to expect as a student. You will hear from various staff members who will share important information with you. Bring something with you to take notes! 

All student support services will be available at the Student Services Fair after your talk so that you may learn about all of the support available to you as students of the University of Edinburgh.

Welcome event details: Thursday 9th January 2020, 10.30 - 12.30, McEwan Hall (attend after your induction meeting)

This is a unique opportunity to meet every support service of the University to find out more information about how they will support you throughout your studies. You will have the opportunity to pick up some goodies and ask your questions too! 

General Welcome Events (optional, but highly recommended) 

Welcome Week is more than just being introduced to your new subject area, it is also about getting to know your new home, meeting fellow students and trying out new things. There are lots of activities to get involved with if you want to.

 

Taste of Scotland - Welcome event!

Welcome event details: Wednesday 8th January 2020, 19:00 -21:00, Teviot Row House

Join us for a truly Scottish experience event on the evening that you arrive, learn about the culture, the food, the language, the country, the folklore, the music and the dancing by taking part in lots of interactive and fun activities. 

Student-led Campus Tours - Book here! 

Welcome event details: Thursday 9th January 2020, various times, meeting at McEwan Hall Pavillion Doors 

There will be a variety of exclusive student-led campus tours arranged for you to learn about the history and culture of the campus, where the main buildings are located and another opportunity to meet your fellow visiting students.
