Careers Events / 'So You Want To Be A...'
Events which offer potential applicants from Widening Participation (WP) backgrounds an insight into competitive professional degrees at the University of Edinburgh and the subsequent careers.
These events are designed to encourage access to a wide range of professional degree courses from students typically under-represented in these areas, and ultimately into the professions themselves. Through offering first-hand information about what it means to study and practice that subject, as well as dealing with any misconceptions which applicants might have about the application process or the subsequent careers, these activities have the potential to inspire and encourage applicants from underrepresented backgrounds to consider them as achievable.
A series of career exploration events and taster sessions for selected professional courses and careers. The sessions are organised, promoted and supported by the WP team, and led by University academics; some are run in collaboration with other local universities. The sessions include professional guest speakers, information on the relevant course(s); admissions information and practical activities designed to give insights into the relevant career. The subjects covered by these sessions are frequently reviewed. In the 2019-20 academic year, the programme included Biomedical Sciences, Engineering, Social Work, Business and Finance and Nursing in addition to the Reach and ACES sessions (Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Law, Art, Design and Architecture).
These events are typically aimed at school pupils in S4-S6 and college students who are considering one of the professional degrees in the programme. The wider events are advertised to WP pupils via LEAPS, while the ones which relate to Reach or ACES (e.g. ‘So you want to be a Lawyer?’) are advertised solely to the pupils registered on those projects.
