Mathematics scholarships and prizes

A number of prizes are available covering all years of study.

First year prizes

Horsburgh Prize

A number of prizes are awarded to the best Engineering students in first and second year Mathematics.

The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Mathematics.

John Lang Scholarship

Two scholarships are awarded annually for high merit to a student in the School of Mathematics.

William Manson Memorial Prize

One or more prizes each are awarded annually to the best Arts, Humanities and Social Science student in First Year Mathematics.

Awards may also be made to Arts, Humanities and Social Science students in Mathematics in later years of study if so recommended by the School.

George Williamson Memorial Prize

A prize is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Mathematics on the basis of distinguished performance in the Degree Examinations to the best student in the first year classes in Applied Mathematics.

Second year awards

Vacation Scholarship

One or more vacation scholarships, are awarded to current students in the second/third year of a Mathematics programme to undertake a research project over the summer months.

Second year students are normally invited to apply by the Prizes and Bequests Committee based on academic performance on the course.

In exceptional circumstances, uninvited applications may also be considered. Applications and further information can be obtained from the Mathematical Teaching Organisation.

Horsburgh Prize

Prizes each are awarded to the best Engineering students in first and second year Mathematics.

The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Mathematics.

Harrison Bursary

Awarded to a student entering their third year for the MA degree on the basis of second year performance.

This is a two year award with the second year of the award depending on satisfactory academic performance in the third year of study. 

William and Isabella Dick Prize for Performance in the Second Year

One or more prizes are awarded annually to the best current student(s) in the second year of a Mathematics Programme.

The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Mathematics on the basis of distinguished performance in the Degree Examinations in the second year.

One or more vacation scholarships are awarded to current students in the second year of a Mathematics programme to undertake a research project over the summer months.

Third year awards

Vacation Scholarship

One or more vacation scholarships are awarded to current students in the second/third year of a Mathematics programme to undertake a research project over the summer months.

Arthur Erdelyi Prizes

Up to three prizes are awarded annually on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Mathematics on the basis of distinguished performance in the Degree Examination for Mathematics 3.

James Ward Memorial Prize

A prize is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Mathematics on the basis of distinguished performance in the Degree Examinations in Mathematics & Statistics 3.

Dr Nigel Suess Prize

One or more prizes are awarded annually on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Mathematics on the basis of distinguished performance in the course "Introduction to Number Theory". The total annual prize fund is £300 and the value of individual prizes will vary depending on the number of prizes awarded.

Fourth and Fifth year prizes

Lawley Memorial Prize

A prize is awarded annually to the candidate with the most distinguished performance in the final degree examinations of a joint honours degree in Statistics taught by the School of Mathematics.

The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners. The prize may be withheld in any year in which there is no candidate of sufficient merit.

Napier Medal and Gangadhar Balwant Gadgil Prize

One prize may be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, to the candidate with the most distinguished performance in the 4th year.

William and Isabella Dick Fourth Year Project Prize

Up to two prizes are awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, for the best Fourth year Project/Dissertation.

William and Isabella Dick Fifth Year Project Prize

Up to two prizes are awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, for the best Fifth year Project/Dissertation.

William and Isabella Dick Prize for the Best Fifth Year Student

One prize may be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, to the candidate with the most distinguished performance in the 5th year.

Other awards

Simon Gray Prizes

A prize awarded to a second or third year student for distinguished performance in a Mathematics course which encompasses statistics. Up to two prizes may be awarded in any one year.

Kelland Memorial Prize

A prize is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners for distinguished performance to a student from any College who has attended a Mathematics course for the first time in the current year as a direct entrant into the Second year.

Operational Research MSc Prize

One prize may be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, to the candidate with the most distinguished performance in the MSc Operational Research.
